Gardeners Hanwell Health and Safety Policy

This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Gardeners Hanwell manages safety for our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. Our gardening and grounds maintenance work involves the use of tools, machinery and materials, and we are committed to carrying out every task in a way that minimises risk and promotes a safe, tidy and respectful working environment.

This policy applies to all staff and contractors representing Gardeners Hanwell at any site where we provide gardening, landscaping, lawn care, hedge trimming, planting or related services.

Our Health and Safety Commitments

Gardeners Hanwell is committed to providing a working environment where health, safety and welfare are integral to planning and day to day operations. We will

Identify, assess and manage health and safety risks associated with gardening and grounds maintenance tasks.

Provide and maintain tools, machinery and equipment that are safe and suitable for use.

Offer appropriate information, instruction and training so that staff can work safely and competently.

Ensure that our work practices take account of the safety of clients, visitors, neighbours and other members of the public.

Review and update this policy and our procedures regularly to reflect changes in legislation, guidance or working methods.

Responsibilities for Health and Safety

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Hanwell rests with the company management, who are responsible for ensuring that suitable arrangements, resources and supervision are in place.

Managers and team leaders are responsible for

Implementing this policy on each job.

Undertaking and recording risk assessments before work begins or when conditions change.

Providing staff with clear instructions and site specific safety information.

Checking that equipment is maintained, inspected and used correctly.

All employees and contractors working for Gardeners Hanwell must

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Follow all safety instructions, training and site rules.

Use personal protective equipment provided, and look after it appropriately.

Report accidents, near misses, hazards and defective equipment to management without delay.

Not misuse or interfere with anything provided for health and safety purposes.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before commencing work on any gardening or maintenance project, a risk assessment will be carried out that considers

The nature of the tasks to be performed, including use of power tools and machinery.

Slopes, steps, uneven ground, water features or other site specific hazards.

Weather conditions and reduced visibility that might affect safety.

Access routes, vehicle movements and public footpaths.

The presence of underground or overhead services where relevant.

Appropriate control measures will then be implemented, such as using barriers or signs, adjusting work methods, restricting access to hazardous areas and scheduling noisy or high risk tasks at suitable times. Staff are expected to adapt to changing conditions by reassessing risks throughout the job.

Tools, Machinery and Equipment

Gardeners Hanwell will ensure that tools and machinery used for lawn care, hedge cutting, tree work, leaf clearance, pressure washing and other tasks are properly maintained and suitable for the job. In particular

Equipment will be inspected regularly and serviced in line with manufacturer guidelines.

Defective or damaged tools must be taken out of use immediately and reported.

Only trained and authorised personnel may operate specialist or powered equipment.

Guards, safety switches and other protective devices must not be removed or overridden.

Fuel, oils and other substances will be stored, handled and disposed of safely and responsibly.

Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment will be provided as required by the nature of the work. Depending on the task, this may include safety boots, gloves, high visibility clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, respiratory protection, hard hats and weather appropriate clothing.

Staff must wear the protective equipment specified for each job, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage so that it can be replaced. Personal protective equipment is a last line of defence and must be used alongside, not instead of, safe working practices and engineering controls.

Safe Use of Chemicals and Substances

When using fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, cleaning agents or other substances, Gardeners Hanwell will follow product instructions and relevant safety data. Controls may include

Substituting less hazardous products where reasonably practicable.

Ensuring correct storage, dilution, mixing and application methods.

Wearing appropriate protective equipment for handling and application.

Preventing contact with skin and eyes and reducing inhalation of vapours, mists or dusts.

Preventing run off to drains, watercourses or neighbouring properties.

Containers will be clearly labelled and never reused for other purposes. Clients will be advised of any relevant safety considerations after application, such as keeping pets and children away from treated areas for a specified period.

Client and Public Safety

We plan and conduct our gardening work in a way that minimises inconvenience and risk to clients, neighbours and the public. This includes

Maintaining tidy work areas, keeping walkways clear where possible.

Using warning signs, barriers or cones where there is a risk from equipment, debris or vehicles.

Controlling access to areas where machinery is being used or where overhead work is taking place.

Managing noise, dust and vibrations as far as reasonably practicable.

Leaving sites safe, clean and secure at the end of each working day.

Training, Supervision and Communication

Gardeners Hanwell will provide appropriate induction and task specific training so that staff understand how to carry out their work safely and in accordance with this policy. Training may cover

Safe use of tools and machinery.

Manual handling and the prevention of musculoskeletal injury.

Working at height, where relevant.

Use of personal protective equipment.

Emergency procedures and incident reporting.

New or less experienced staff will receive suitable supervision and support until they are competent to work with a greater degree of independence. Health and safety expectations will be communicated clearly and reinforced through regular briefings and reviews.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to management so that they can be recorded, investigated and used to improve our controls. Where necessary, first aid will be provided by a competent person and, if required, emergency services will be contacted.

Team members must familiarise themselves with site specific emergency arrangements, including access routes for emergency vehicles and the location of first aid supplies. Lessons learned from incidents will be shared with staff and incorporated into training and revised procedures.

Monitoring and Review

Gardeners Hanwell will monitor compliance with this Health and Safety Policy through inspections, feedback from staff and clients, and review of accident and incident data. Where shortcomings are identified, corrective actions will be taken without undue delay.

This policy will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, equipment, legislation or best practice. Updated versions will be communicated to all staff and will replace previous editions.
